Our State's Ground Ambulance Response Safety Net Is At-Risk

Each year, state budget constraints prevent Texas from receiving its full federal matching funds for ground ambulance reimbursement. Further exacerbating this problem, 4.8 million Texas adults –  17.3 percent of the population – are lacking any health insurance. Texas has both the highest number and greatest percentage of uninsured adults in the nation. As a result, Texas ground ambulance service is stretched thin resulting in diminished response times and limited ambulance coverage in and between Texas communities. These ambulance coverage gaps most often occur in areas commonly traveled between Texas Cities; and in less populated non-incorporated Texas suburbs near larger towns and cities.
